Moby is one of the most famous DJs and producers. He is mostly known for his tracks in electronic music in the genres of techno, downtempo, or trip-hop. Earlier this year, however, he released an entire album as free download in the ambient style. No vocals or bass line, just calm music for relaxing. Put in his own words, this is for “when i do yoga or sleep or meditate or panic”.
As the citation implies, he mostly wrote these pieces of music for himself. It is a nice gift to give this music away for free, for everyone to listen to. I guess there is just not any big market for this kind of music anyway.
Overall, this is an interesting experiment. This album has nice background tracks that can even be used while working without distracting. This kind of music often does not work for me to get to sleep, as I appear to be constantly waiting for the track to progress when I concentrate on listening. Some of these tracks are nice for the moments of self-reflection or meditation, whatever you might call it.
